One day on Drawing the Figure
One day on Painting the Figure (Oil or Acrylic)
One day on Sculpting the Figure
Whether you are a new or experienced artist, this three-day summer institute taught by UNH Art Faculty will immerse you in the enjoyment and vigor of drawing, painting, and sculpting the human figure using a live model. The institute is designed for anyone interested in enhancing their art skills. If you teach or use art in the classroom, you will develop new or improved skills that you can bring to the classroom.
Each day you will approach figurative art from a different medium: spending one day on drawing, one day on painting, and one day on sculpting.
The three days and the supplies needed for each day are below.
DAY 1: DRAWING THE FIGURE
Emphasis will be on gesture, proportion and basic artistic anatomy as well as expressive line, convincing tone and the power of composition. You’ll have fun exploring a range of drawing media while you sharpen your perceptual skills to capture the vitality of the live model. Drawing demonstration will be included.
Bring these supplies for the day of drawing:
18” x 24” Drawing Pad of least 70lb paper, 18’’x 24’’ Newsprint Paper Pad, drawing board to fit pads, six sticks medium vine charcoal, black conte crayon (red optional in addition), charcoal pencil, kneaded eraser, white mars eraser, masking tape, fixative, and bulldog clips.
DAY 2: PAINTING THE FIGURE (OIL OR ACRYLIC)
In this 6-hour workshop you will use oil or acrylic paint to paint from a nude life model. After an introduction with masterworks examples, you start with a small sketch about 12”x16”, emphasizing tonality using a limited palette. Later in the morning, you use a full palette to paint medium size painting (between 18”x24” and 24”x30”). The easels, painting tables, and solvents for painting will be on hand for your use; however you will need to bring your own painting supplies as noted below.
Bring these supplies for the day of painting:
Pencil, eraser, and sketchbook or 5 sheets of 9“x12” drawing paper; 2 sheets 12”x16” canvas paper or gessoed paper (heavy paper, e.g. watercolor paper or Bristol Board, prepared with 2 coats of gesso); a stretched canvas (instead of canvas board) size between 18”x24” and 24”x30”; Oil or Acrylic paint, 37 ml. tube, in Basic Palette: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Yellow Ocher, Burnt Siena, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Viridian, Cadmium Yellow Light, and Cadmium Orange; long handle brushes, Bristle for oil painters and Nylon for acrylic painters, 2 of each: size 4, 6, 8, and 10, in “flat” or “bright” shape; a palette (wood, glass or disposable) 9”x12” or larger; 2 Palette Knives: 1 small and 1 medium size; rags and a glass jar for solvent.
Optional Supplies:
Paint box or Tool Box, Apron or smock, hand cream, soap, latex gloves, etc.
DAY 3: SCULPTING THE FIGURE
The day of figure sculpture will introduce you to the fundamental principles of figure modeling; from gesture and planer studies to the close observation and articulation of contour and surface. You will work on a 36” standing figure with armature and water based clay. All work will be done from a live model in the figure modeling studio of the UNH Art Department. You are welcome to document your work photographically, but will not be firing or casting your finished pieces. Be sure to bring a camera if you want to photograph your work. All necessary materials will be supplied in the sculpting workshop.
