DURING THE MARCH 20 SESSION,
you will focus on one-on-one strategies for coaching victims of school bullying. We will ask "what causes victim behavior," "what experiences created the victim's behavior," and "what coaching techniques are most effective when working with children or teens who are the victims of peer or adult bullies. You will look at coaching strategies that you can apply one-on-one with the child or teen who has been victimized. You will consider a variety of interventions to help the victim deal with the bully and with the feelings that the bullying situation engenders. Among these interventions will be: problem-based learning (PBL), problem solving, literature-based lessons, assertiveness techniques, role-playing, increasing awareness, empowerment exercises, and understanding/knowledge of bullying. You will also look at crisis management and suicide prevention interventions that you may need to employ as a coach to a child or teen who has been victimized. Topics will also include: how to inform teachers, school staff, and others about the bullying incident; how to encourage important areas of development in children that promote conversation and relationship skills; and what to do when the child or teen is a victim of bullying by teachers, staff, or adults rather than peers.
DURING THE MARCH 27 SESSION,
you will focus on systems strategies for coaching victims of school bullying. An important aspect of coaching children and teens who may be victims of bullying is the work you will need to do to communicate with teachers, school staff, parents, peers, and others about the bullying incident or situation. These social systems play a key role not only in helping victims deal with the bullying, but also are forces that have the ability to increase public and student awareness and understanding of bullying in an effort to prevent further bullying situations from occurring. In your role as a coach, you will want to achieve active parent and teacher involvement in order to empower victims and to develop sanctions against bullying behavior. This web workshop will focus on how you as a coach to a child or teen who has been bullied can muster the involvement and support of--as well as provide education to--the systems that surround the victim or bully. Research shows that teacher preparedness and student reporting play a pivotal role in the teacher's reactions to bullying. This web workshop will explore how you can advocate for community, school and classroom-level strategies for bully prevention and victim protection. These strategies include encouraging and assisting schools in creating bully prevention committees and seeking involvement from community members to join these committees. You will also examine your role in encouraging schools to: conduct continual staff training and bullying discussion groups; post and use rules against bullying; organize weekly class meetings and parent groups; enhance supervision around bullies and victims; and develop staff procedures for handling bullies, victims and bystanders. You will also learn about support groups that you can educate victims to get involve in, such as "The Allies in Action Program" (offering training for victims to become peer facilitators) and "Club Ophelia" (focusing on empowering victims).
You will need a computer and web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc.) to log into the live online workshop.
Coaching School Bullies
Thursday, April 12 and 19, 3 p.m.-4 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time)

DURING THE APRIL 12 SESSION,
you will focus on one-on-one strategies for coaching school bullies. You'll look at the attributes and myths about children and teens who bully, and you'll examine various one-on-one intervention strategies that can be used by coaching professionals to work with bullies. You'll explore the unique advantages of "coaching" vs. "counseling" and discuss how monitoring bullying behavior, gathering teacher and peer observations, and confronting and labeling the bully's intentional aggression can be an effective way to deal with bullies. The role of the coach in a bullying situation will be discussed, in particular how coaches can instruct bullies to amend their behavior and establish prosocial practices. You'll gain critical skills to help you provide clear behavioral expectations that are free of loopholes or ambiguity that the bully can take advantage of. You'll learn how to avoid debates and arguments, rehearse how to avoid dropping your guard with a bully, focus on feelings rather than facts, and go beyond consequences to a practice of "good deeds".
DURING THE APRIL 19 SESSION,
you will focus on using a systems approach to coach and confront bullies. To effectively deal with school bullies, professional coaches must take into account the various systems that are at play in schools, families, and other structures to prevent, address, or stop bullying behavior. This web session will look at a variety of models and systems used to deal with bullies, including The Fast Track Program, Olweus Bully Prevention Program, Youth Matters, Bully Busters, and PEACE pak (Preparation, Education, Action, Coping and Evaluation). As a professional coach, your role must include educating students, teachers and parents about how to: establish zero tolerance "No Bullying" policies; develop clear staff receptivity to victim and bystander reports of bullying; build genuine relationships with all children; use serious consequences for acts committed by bullies; teach bullies to understand the victim's point of view; monitor bullies closely; defuse bullying situations immediately at school or home; verbally reprimand and process events with bullies individually; and maintain records of bullying incidents and interventions. Each of these programs has systems strategies in common and this session will give you an opportunity to examine these and enhance your skills in the coaching process.
You will need a computer and web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, etc.) to log into the live online workshop.
